Thousands of books are in print on how to have a healthy relationship. Those of us, however, who watch Big Bang Theory- know how it’s done: with honesty to one’s feelings, understanding the other’s opinion, forgiveness and humor.

Howard and Bernadette Wolowitz seem to experience the relationship most of us have with our significate other. They fight, storm off, talk to friends about the situation. Bernadette is the best grounded of the gang with her relationship with her parents. They may not understand why their bubbly daughter picked Howard to be her husband, but their approval and their love shine through. Howard- spoiled by his mother for so many years- has a gem in Bernadette who reminds him that he is, in fact, a partner in this marriage, therefore must do his part.

Leonard and Penny Hofstadter

Leonard and Penny Hofstadter seem to be looking for gratification and acceptance from others. Penny wanted to be an actress- never got the recognition she wanted. Leonard’s been looking for acceptance from his mother for years. Penny may not understand Leonard’s work- but she seems to be able to give him the credit that is due to his work. Leonard brought Penny out of the ‘pie in the sky’ dream of being on film but encourages her to do the best she can do as a Pharmaceutical Representative.

Rajesh Koothrappali

Rajesh Koothrappali. The single man out. His character gets lost with all the hook-ups, but most of us can still relate to Raj. We go home alone. Then, we prepare large healthy meals for ourselves and wonder why – Oh, yeah, because our Moms and Health Teachers told us to do so. His ‘heartbeat’ is his Yorkshire Terrier, ‘Cinnamon’. Someone who is always waiting for him with affection and few wet kisses. Raj is trying to figure out how he fits in this community of friends He can be counted on to bring them the latest on food or updates on TV reality shows and the best party ideas.

Sheldon and Amy

Sheldon and Amy. Two highly intelligent scientists, one a bit more grounded in human interactions than the other. When they disagree, “Shamy” discusses the issue calmly and comes to a consensus, as well as a compromise that will suit both parties. There is acceptance with each other’s limitations about phobias and both help each other to conquer and move forward.

It is thought provoking the couple who has the most trouble dealing with the outside world finds the best way to have a healthy relationship.  Without fail, we can see ourselves working out how to live with our partner in each episode of Big Bang. I think the trick is not to be too much of one distinctive couple, but always growing, maturing and learning how to be better. All the time with love, forgiveness and most of all humor.
