It is no secret that Sheldon Cooper is a fan favorite on The Big Bang Theory. He’s hilarious and has perhaps the most complete character development on the show. Well, news on the Internet is that we may be getting a Big Bang Theory prequel that focuses on Dr. Sheldon Cooper. This is huge news for the Big Bang community. Let’s go over the information that is available.

The title has been released, Sheldon. How original, right? Oh well, the title is not the important thing, it’s the writing. However, details of the new series are being kept under wraps. But it has been described as a Malcolm in the Middle-esque single-camera family comedy centered on the child prodigy Sheldon character at age 12. I loved Malcolm and in the Middle and I would honestly love to see a young Sheldon. If this is done right, I think it could be a hit.

The project is yet to be written. It is getting a pilot order. Though sources suggest that it is considered a shoo-in for a series pickup for next season. Sheldon may be produced by Big Bang co-creator/executive producer Chuck Lorre, executive producer/showrunner Steve Molaro, and Parsons. Big Bang co-creator/exec producer Bill Prady also is expected to be involved in some capacity. This is great news. If it has people from the original show, then they will stay true to what fans love about the original.

On The Big Bang Theory, there have been clues about Sheldon’s childhood in Galveston, TX. History is slowly revealed here and there, things about his family, about his older brother George and fraternal and twin sister Missy. Their mother, Mary Cooper, is an overtly devout Evangelical Christian, played by Laurie Metcalf. And finally, father George Cooper, an alcoholic who was never around. Sheldon also had a grandmother, Meemaw, and grandfather, Pop-Pop, who died when Sheldon was 5.

Sheldon will be looking to join The Big Bang Theory on the CBS schedule next season. Big Bang is in its 10th season, the last under the current three-year pickup at CBS.  The two series are said to be designed in a way that allows them to co-exist.

Cast Contracts

The network and studio also need to secure new deals with the comedy’s stars Parsons, Johnny Galecki, and Kaley Cuoco.

In its 10th season, The Big Bang Theory remains the biggest comedy series on television. What’s more, it ranks as the most-watched program on broadcast TV, ahead of NCIS and Sunday Night Football. The show averages 18.15 million viewers in the most recent ratings. The sitcom regularly draws more than 14 million live viewers.

CBS is a huge fan of spinoffs. Shortly after The Good Wife ended, the network announced a spinoff would be airing on CBS All Access. The network also has spinoffs of NCIS and Criminal Minds currently in rotation. CBS has also attempted other spinoff shows in the past. A prequel is a different sort of deal for the network, and a prequel for a comedy is even more outside-the-box.
