Was Charlie Really Her First?
Kathy Bates’ first Emmy came from an unexpected role. The Oscar winner scored the accolade for her guest spot on a 2012 episode of Two and a Half Men playing the ghost of Charlie Harper. I have to admit, that is unexpected. Two and a Half Men was really her first Emmy? I guess she hasn’t done much television work. Someone correct me on that, if I am wrong.
Chuck and Kathy Meet
Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men and the Big Bang Theory had never met Bates before. “But when I pitched the idea to her, she immediately got the surreal, twisted nature of the whole thing,” he says.
The relationship between Bates and Lorre will continue when Bates headlines the Netflix comedy Disjointed. The Netflix show was created by Lorre and David Javerbaum. David Javerbaum was a former head writer on The Daily Show. “I can’t wait to work with Chuck again,” Bates says. “It’s going to be a really fun, interesting show.”
Lorre says: “Kathy plays Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, a woman whose lifelong mission has been to decriminalize marijuana. She’s something of an icon in that movement. The series is about what happens when that mission is accomplished. She is faced with running a legal cannabis establishment with her son and a staff of young budtenders. Business, family, and romance are difficult — they’re harder stoned.”
Lorre is known for putting together great ensembles, such as The Big Bang Theory, and Bates says Disjointed is no exception. “Chuck is so great at casting and he’s already putting together some exciting young actors,” Bates notes. That includes Jessica Lu, whom Bates worked with on American Horror Story: Hotel last year. “I think she’s one of the kids I killed,” Bates notes. She did. Also announced are Aaron Moten and Dougie Baldwin.
Lorre has also already cast Lily Mae Harrington to play the younger Kathy Bates character. Harrington is an actress and singer. She rose to national fame when she competed in Season 2 of the Oxygen reality series The Glee Project, finishing in fourth place. She also appeared as Pam Brown in the recent Netflix original film Pee Wee’s Big Holiday and the YouTube Red series Sing It! as Adeline.
Lorre says he’s excited to get back to work with Bates. “The night we shot the Two and a Half Men episode, she broke her toe an hour before show time. I was ready to shut it down, but she insisted on performing. And she did. And she was amazing — hilarious and flawless.”
Kathy Bates is one of my favorite actresses. I’m not really sure if the basis of this show appeals to me, but I may give it a shot for her. I’ve never seen American Horror Story, but I bet you she was great in it. Bates was absolutely terrifying in Misery. Has she been in any other horror productions?
