Let’s be honest here, Sheldon and Amy just might be the fan favorite couple on the Big Bang Theory. It’s no argument that Sheldon is a fan favorite and combining him with Amy just makes them such a cute and quirky couple. Of course, it was a long road to get them where they are today, with all of Sheldon’s hesitations. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and look at the evolution of this infamous pairing. There is a lot of history to look at, so this may be a multiple series of articles.
Getting to Know Each Other
Howard and Raj make Sheldon an online dating profile in “The Lunar Excitation” and find a match for him in Amy Farrah Fowler. Sheldon has every intention of rejecting Amy, however he is surprised by how similar they are. Amy tells Sheldon that she only signed up for the dating site to fulfill her promise to her mother that she would go on at least one date a year. Amy then informs him that all forms of physical contact are prohibited and Sheldon offers to buy her a drink. As Sheldon stands at the counter, Amy looks away with a satisfied smile on her face.
At the start of Season 4, it is revealed that Sheldon and Amy have been communicating with each other on a daily basis since they first met, though they only communicate through text and email. Penny persuades the two to go on an actual date and Sheldon and Amy actually enjoy the date. Soon after that, Amy and Sheldon begin chatting on their webcams, and Sheldon starts seeing Amy more frequently.
Sheldon and Amy had a fight over whose field is more important in the episode “The Zazzy Substitution.” This causes them to put the brakes on their blossoming relationship. Sheldon seems to take this well at first, but then resorts to adopting 25 cats in order to fill the void that Amy has left behind. A worried Leonard calls Sheldon’s mother, Mary Cooper, who successfully reunites them. The two discover that they both like cats before eventually giving all of them away.
Later on, in “The Desperation Emanation”, Amy asks Sheldon to meet her mother Sheldon thinks that Amy wanted to take their relationship to the next level, which panics him. In response, he changes ALL of his contact information. Amy still manages to find him and reassures him that she only wanted him to pretend to be her boyfriend in order to please her mother.
The Kiss
In the episode “The Agreement Dissection”, Sheldon joins Bernadette, Penny, and Amy for their girls’ night out, after Priya tries to make him eat Greek food, which he despises. During the outing, Sheldon expresses his concerns about Amy who has started drinking and smoking cigars. Amy, under the influence, calls Sheldon “a sexy toddler” because he smells like baby powder to which Sheldon replies “I don’t know how to process that.”
Bernadette starts to tease Sheldon that he should kiss Amy. This leads to Penny’s question, “Sheldon, have you ever kissed a girl?” We all know the answer to that one. When asked if he was curious, Amy says “I’m available for experimentation.” Sheldon responded by politely declining her invitation and explaining that scientists already know everything there is to know about kissing, and goes on to explain about the thirty-six different facial muscles. Amy replies “blah blah blah” and hilariously kisses Penny instead.
As the night progresses, Penny decides to take Sheldon dancing, Sheldon reveals himself to be proficient in the Rumba, Waltz, and Cha Cha, which surprises Amy. Later on in the episode, he is seen dancing with Amy, but not with Penny or Bernadette.
At the end of the night, Sheldon brings Amy back to her apartment, as she is way too intoxicated. Amy invites Sheldon in for a Yoo-Hoo, which he accepts. Later, Amy kisses Sheldon. He responds with “fascinating” while Amy states “I hope you don’t take what I’m about to do as a comment on what we just did.” She then goes to bathroom and vomits. Sheldon stays with her until she passes out on her bathroom floor. He folds a towel and puts it under her head as a pillow before leaving. Awww!
Jealousy
In “The Pulled Groin Extrapolation,” Amy askes Leonard instead of Sheldon to attend a wedding with her, since the last time Amy took Sheldon to a wedding didn’t go over so well. Later on, Sheldon tells Leonard that Amy is “not for you” after mistaking that something happened between the two.
Getting Serious
In “The Isolation Permutation,” Amy is left out from Bernadette and Penny’s bridesmaid dress shopping. This results in Sheldon comforting her and the two cuddle for the first time.
Stuart, the comic book store owner, eventually expresses his interest in asking Amy out. Sheldon thinks that an intelligent woman like Amy would never agree to go out with someone as average as Stuart. When Sheldon finds out Amy actually agreed to go out with Stuart, he starts feeling jealous though he tries to hide it. Sheldon eventually crashes Amy’s movie date with Stuart. They agree to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Later, Amy finds Sheldon waiting for her at her apartment with a 31-page Relationship Agreement.
