AMC Wants The Walking Dead To Last Forever

The Walking Dead | Photo Credit AMC AMC has already started treating The Walking Dead like their very own Star Trek. With about 10 million live viewers each episode, and a few million more on DVR and online, The Walking Dead will continue for quite some time.

Robert Kirkman, the comic creator, has already said that he feels like the show could last 12 seasons, but Showrunner Scott M. Gimple believes that the television show could go even beyond everyone’s expectations.

In fact, Gimple told the New York Daily News it could last two decades.

“We are trying to do twenty years,” said Gimple. “The Walking Dead comic has certainly done it, and I look forward to every issue.” This means they would be following some other long-running shows.

Shows like The Simpsons and Law & Order have both done over twenty seasons each and then there are shows like CSI and ER that have lasted over 15 seasons and seem to also have unlimited possibilities and storylines.

The Walking Dead is known for being frugal, so perhaps it’s possible. The only real question is…

Will Fans Follow Along For Two Decades?

This will really depend on the fan base behind the show. Based on the first half of Season 7, there are points that will turn away certain fans, but as long as the majority of the show remains true, the fans will stick with the series.

It’s hard to picture actors and actresses lasting on a show like The Walking Dead for twenty years. Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl Grimes, has already grown up on the show, so he would essentially live and breathe the zombie apocalypse for a lifetime.

Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon could make it to the very end, despite how long the series lasts, but most of the other characters could die at any point. With that in mind, Season 20 might be an entirely new cast of survivors.

Would you stick with the series for twenty years?
