It was just over a year ago that John Luke and Mary Kate wed on national television. The couple were only 19 years old at the time. The ceremony was officiated by Willie Robertson, John Luke’s father, and took place at the family farm house. At a time when most teens are choosing colleges and attending senior year parties, the two made a commitment to their each other and their Lord to stay together forever.

Mary Kate wrote of how moving sixteen hours away from her childhood home put a strain on her mentally. Not only was she a freshman at Liberty University, she was navigating a new marriage relationship, and attending speaking events with John Luke monthly. The Duck Dynasty star shared, “I expected it to be a challenging season of life but nothing could have prepared me for what we were getting into.” She goes on to explain her symptoms, “During this time I cried every single day. There was always this overwhelming feeling of sadness. I felt overwhelmed by social situations and talking to people… was extremely stressed out over my classes. I got anxiety over driving.”

The Robertsons have a strong family faith, and Mary Kate and John Luke are no exception.  Both have been very vocal on social media about their Christian beliefs. In her blog post, entitled “My Battle With Depression,” Mary Kate talks about seeking God in her lowest moments. The Little Duck Wife exlpains, “my soul was thirsting for God and I ran to Him. I was in the Word daily for encouragement. I asked Him to restore my joy.”

Family Intervention

Mary Kate confides in her readers that she spent many hours talking to both her parents and famous Duck Wife, Korie Robertson, about her anxious state. Ultimately the family decided Mary Kate needed medical attention. A doctor told her about a chemical deficiency, and helped prescribe supplements. Mary Kate also discloses in the post that she is a long time sufferer of Lyme Disease.

The young Duck Wife is quick to point out that John Luke was a supportive husband throughout this trying time, and that their marriage did not suffer. The couple will continue to face life’s challenges together. They follow the example of many other Duck Dynasty couples who have a long history of successful marriages.

Ultimately Thanking God

In true Duck Dynasty fashion, Mary Kate ultimately gave all the glory to God in overcoming her depression.
