Ocean-Walkers, On The Land

In “Something They Need,” The Walking Dead brought some brand new walkers to the screen like audiences have never seen before. Cloaked in algae, seaweed, and crustaceans, these sea walkers were haunting.

“We’ve got some walkers that are coming out of the ocean,” said Victor Scalise, who is one of the VFX Supervisors. These walkers come from a yacht that had crashed off the coast, near Oceanside. “These walkers are waterlogged, covered with barnacles, and seaweed, so it’s kind of a new look, which is fun.”

It took a lot of time to bring these sea-walkers to life.

Choreography Is Key For Killing Walkers

The crew made this look like an enormous horde of walkers. In reality, there were around 30-70 extras, covered in barnacles. “It actually makes it easier to get in the scene, because the things are so terrifying,” said newcomer actress Dahlia Legault, who plays Francine.

It looks like chaos, but the scene is very orchestrated and organized. “We’ve got a lot of room for people to make the kills,” confirmed actor Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl Grimes on the series. “It’s kind of hard to block it all out.”

They make these numbers look larger by choreographing the scene and interweaving the various shots together.

Mastering The Craft Of Zombie Make-Up

“When you see the way we’re recording it, a lot of the shots are woven, rather than cut, so they look like single, isolated moments,” confirmed Episode 715 Director Michael Slovis (Breaking Bad, CSI).

Despite being on the air this long, the show can still deliver “fresh” walkers, unlike anything on television before. “Even after seven years, to keep coming up with these beautiful things, like the deterioration of the zombies, is amazing,” said Andrew Lincoln. “It’s so masterful.”
