We like all Pokémon, of course, but we do have our favorites.  Mine’s Empoleon, by the way.  Every generation also has its “trash” Pokémon that players ridicule or just completely ignore. A common trait of those ignored Pokémon is that they’re all normal types, evolve at a pretty low level and they become HM slaves (Pokémon that exclusively know HM moves so that other Pokémon in the party can learn more useful moves).  In order of generations they are: Rattata, Sentret, Zigzagoon, Bidoof, Patrat and Bunnelby.

Pidgey in Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO has a different case.  It’s most common Pokémon is actually is one of its most useful. Pidgey, with a whopping 15.98% chance of spawning (Rattata only has a 13.05% chance), is actually one of the most useful Pokémons you can catch. Because of the way Pokémon GO awards exp, it doesn’t matter if you evolve a Magikarp into a Gyarados or a Rattata into a Raticate, Pokémon GO will still award you with the same 500 exp. This is where Pidgey comes in, with its ridiculously low candy requirement to evolve.  Pidgey needs only 12 while Rattata needs 25.  You only need to catch 4 Pidgeys to evolve one of them.

Maximizing your Pidgey Collection

You should actually stockpile a lot of Pidgeys and Pidgey Candies.  You should also combine evolving them with using a Lucky Egg. Lucky Eggs double any exp you receive within 30 minutes of using one.  It takes around a minute for the animation to end when evolving a Pokémon.  Using this strategy, you can evolve 30 Pidgeys into Pidgeottos for the full duration of a Lucky Egg netting you 30,000 exp [500 x 2 (for the lucky egg bonus) x 30 Pidgeys]. If you have a fast smartphone and a responsive internet connection, you can actually close the app and restart it to skip the animation giving you more time to evolve more Pidgeys.

So in short, use Pidgey’s commonness to your benefit!  Happy hunting…
