In the “New Best Friends,” episode of The Walking Dead, audiences are more excited about Carol and Daryl’s reconnection than anything Rick has done. After stopping Richard’s plot to possibly hurt Carol, Daryl went out to find her.
To say the least, the scene was very emotional. Daryl hadn’t seen Carol in quite some time, not to mention that he’s spent some of that time in prison at Negan’s Sanctuary. All he can ask when she opens the door is why she ever left.
The scene was truly heartbreaking to watch.
Melissa McBride Discusses Filming The Scene

During one of the bonus clips on Talking Dead, actress Melissa McBride spoke about the scene and how it made her feel:
“It was so exciting to work with Norman again. I’m not usually very early to set, but on this day in particular, I came early because I was so excited to get started. We’re blocking the scene for when he appears at the door of the cottage. I open the door and I just lose it. Norman’s like, I gotta walk away because I might lose it too. We kind of knew how that scene was going to go from that point. It’s exciting, very exciting.”

For Norman Reedus:
“Shooting that scene with Melissa, [Daryl] doesn’t get it. [He] turns into a little kid. It’s like talking to your mom. “Why’d you go?” She needs to hear that everyone is okay. So I lie to her and tell her everyone’s fine. She needs to hear it. She’s going through her own thing. If I tell her otherwise, she’s going to want to fight and that’s the last thing she wants to do. She’s trying to find herself. So I tell her what she needs to hear.”
For those watching the scene, there are several pivotal points of emotion. Daryl is heartbroken on the porch but willing to listen inside the cabin. Once he hears her story, there’s nothing else to do but tell her everything is okay.
