Mayim Bialik’s most recently vlog surrounded her disdain for being called a “girl” instead of a “woman.” The outspoken Big Bang Theory actress frequently makes videos talking about feminism and other social injustice issues. Here’s what she had to say.

Mayim opened the video saying, “I’m going to be annoying right now because I’m going to talk about something that a lot of people don’t want to talk about.”
Mayim went on to recount being at a bar recently with a friend (she says a 40-year-old man) who said, “wow look at that girl over there she’s so beautiful.”
Mayim immediately assumed he meant a child, since he used the term girl, and looked around for a lost kid in the bar.
Mayim expressed her outrage for the word usage by saying, “since she’s in that NARROW age range of 5-55, we just don’t know what to call her.” She went on to say, “Sorry folks, I have to do this.
We have to stop calling women, girls.”
Clearly the TBBT actress took major offense to her friend’s words.
But why?
It seems pretty harmless to call a lady sitting at the bar a girl. Mayim disagrees. She said, “It matters what we call people, language matters!” Mayim believes using the same word for young children as adult women means we subconsciously do not equate adult women with adult men.
She said, “in fact it implies that we are inferior to men.”
Mayim Takes Offense

Mayim is so passionate about this that she challenged her viewers to begin to correct people who call women girls. She believes that anyone who is over 18 and pays their own way in the world should be called a woman and nothing else.
She said, “The terms we’re using for women are outdated and insensitive – and they assume a structure of power when men are on the top, and women are on the bottom.”
