This week, U.S. immigration agents plan to begin a nationwide raid to arrest teenagers who have entered the country illegally, without a guardian that may also be suspected as a gang member. This is part of Trump’s enhanced immigrant crackdown.

The raids will begin on Sunday and go through Wednesday, according to official internal memos. The teenagers who are being targeted are on average either 16 or 17-years old. These raids are very different than actions under former President, Barack Obama.

If a person can be identified as a gang member and meet another 1-2 aspects on a list of criteria, then they may be a target.

Reuters writes:

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement that a person can be identified as a gang member if they meet two or more criteria, including having gang tattoos, frequenting an area notorious for gangs and wearing gang apparel. “

“The agency said it does not comment on plans for future law enforcement operations, but that it focuses on individuals who pose a threat to national security and public safety.”

“The memo instructing field offices to prepare for the raids was dated June 30. A Department of Homeland Security official speaking on background confirmed on Friday the raids were still scheduled to take place, though ICE could still change its plans.”

The Hill reports:

“This is troubling on several levels,” executive director Marielena Hincapie said. “For one, the gang databases in places like California are rife with errors. We have seen babies labeled as potential gang members.” In April, Trump turned the spotlight in the immigration debate to violent gangs like MS-13.”

“In a series of tweets, Trump blamed Obama’s immigration policies for allowing the gangs to flourish. Trump tweeted in April that “weak illegal immigration policies of the Obama Administration allowed bad MS 13 gangs to form in cities across U.S.”
