The mental health system in America is broken, and Trump plans to fix it.

Trump has recognized that by allowing serious mental illnesses to go untreated, our security as a nation has suffered. “All the tragic mass murders that occurred in the past several years have something in common,” the Queens, New York native has lamented. He went on to say that the red flags were there, but had continued to be ignored. “We can’t allow that to continue.” Trump declared.

The next President of the United States intends to “expand treatment programs and reform the laws to make it easier to take preventive action and save lives”.

Not Violent, Just in Need of Help

President-elect Trump stated, “Most people with mental health problems are not violent, but just need help.”

Recently, a coalition of different health organizations launched a new campaign to address what they call “behavioral health issues in the criminal justice system.” The coalition echoed the words of Donald Trump in their statement.

They recognize that “mental illness is not a strong predictor of criminal or violent behavior.” The coalition adds that when left untreated, mental illness can lead to behaviors that “cause too many individuals to wind up in the criminal justice system.”

Cracking down on issues

Issues in the mental health system have been made worse by the Obama administration‘s neglect to fix problems with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Center for Mental Health Services.

These two divisions of the Department of Health and Human Services have been overspending on useless projects that do not directly provide services to those who need it the most.

Republican representatives, like Tim Murphy, are leading reforms on mental health policies of the Obama administration’s Cures act.

Republican Senator John Cornyn echoed Murphy’s efforts to fix the corrupt organization. With these supporters on his team, I feel sure Trump will support efforts from his party to redirect efforts into helping those in need of mental healthcare.
