Mayim Bialik, The Un-Hollywood Star
Despite being one of Hollywood’s highest paid actors, actress Mayim Bialik is more of a “geeky mom” than a “Hollywood elite.” For the past seven years, this means playing Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory.
Sheldon’s girlfriend Amy, is a socially awkward, cardigan-loving neuroscientist, which pays the actress about $500,000 per episode. “I don’t have a housekeeper, nanny, or chef,” says Bialik.
“I use a babysitter less than once a month,” she says proudly, happy just to work and spend time with family.
Unorthodox Parenting Styles
“The 41-year-old is as well known as an actress as for her unorthodox and outspoken approaches to modern motherhood. Her sons Miles, 11, and Fred, eight, were raised without nappies, a process called “elimination communication,” whereby the parent learns to interpret signals from their baby that they are ready to use the toilet.”
“They were also breastfed until they were aged four and two respectively, and the family adopted the practice of co-sleeping, with Bialik and her husband sharing their bed with their sons. She also initially refused to have her children vaccinated, although they subsequently have been.”
Bialik Marches To Her Own Drum
With that in mind, it’s clear that Bialik is comfortable marching to the beat of her own drum. Many eventually blamed this intense style of parenting to the couple’s divorce, but she said, “relationships are complicated no matter what style of parenting you choose.”
Currently, the actress has been ordered by doctors not to speak for 30 days due to a sprain in her vocal cords. Bialik posted a silent video to let fans know the news, while she typed and waved at the camera.
Her voice should return by the time they begin filming the next season of The Big Bang Theory. All of the cast members have had paydays that have doubled in the last few years, per episode. “Our strength lies in being together,” said the actress.
Ironically, she doesn’t even have a television in her home.
