Actress Mayim Bailik Was Accepted into Harvard and Yale

Mayim Bialik, who plays Sheldon Cooper’s main squeeze, Amy Farrah Fowler, is no stranger to popular situation comedy shows. Bialik actually started out very young and gained success early. She was 14 when she landed the role of Blossom Russo on the popular 90s show, Blossom. Mayim Bailik was successfully able to transform for child star to accomplished actress. Mayim Bialik was born on December 12, 1975 in San Diego, California. She began acting as a child and landed big roles that launched her into fame early on. Though, she would take a long break from acting later. Bialik played a young version of Bette Midler’s character in the 1988 film Beaches, and went on to star in her own television show, Blossom (mentioned above).

Once Blossom wrapped, Bialik pursued a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. Although she had been accepted at both Harvard and Yale, she completed the degree at UCLA in 2007. She stated that her decision to attend ULCA was based on that she wanted to stay close to her parents and did not want to move to the East Coast. She earned a B.S. degree in neuroscience, with minors in Hebrew and Jewish studies. Then Bialik went on to study for a doctorate in neuroscience. Her dissertation was an investigation of hypothalamic activity in patients with Prader–Willi syndrome, titled “Hypothalamic regulation in relation to maladaptive, obsessive-compulsive, affiliative, and satiety behaviors in Prader-Willi syndrome.

Bialik returned to acting in 2009 when she landed the role on the third season of The Big Bang Theory as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler. Ironically, Amy is a neurobiologist. Her performance as Amy earned her Emmy Award nominations in 2012 and 2015 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

 In August 2015, Bialik launched her own lifestyle website, GrokNation. GrokNation is aimed towards women and includes a wide variety of topics such as religion, pop culture, parenting, and Hollywood. Bialik also mentioned in her interviews that her website’s title was in reference to the classic 1961 sci-fi novel Stranger in a Strange Land and was derived from the word ‘grok’ which means to fully grasp something in the deepest way possible. Bialik has also written two books with pediatrician Jay Gordon. Beyond the Sling is about “attachment parenting.” She also has her own cookbook, Mayim’s Vegan Table, which contains over one hundred vegan recipes.

Bialik has two children, Miles and Fredrick, with ex-husband Michael Stone. They were married from 2003-2013. In 2012, Bailik brought back the beloved 90s character, Blossom Russo, in an Old Navy commercial. Also present was her former co-star, Joseph Lawrence. In 2014, she became the guest host on the TV Land edition of the reality show “Candid Camera.” Mialik has certainly come a long way since her innocent childhood days on the set of Blossom. Who knows what else she will take on and accomplish once the Big Bang Theory airs its final episode?
