Ah, Johnny Galecki. He was a staple 90s heartthrob for some (me!) during his time on the iconic sitcom Roseanne. Galecki has certainly come a long way since his days as David Healy. Starring in such awesome films such as Suicide Kings, Hancock, and Bookies, Galecki even managed to find success as a lead in another iconic television series. Johnny Mark Galecki was actually born in Belgium and moved to Illinois when he was 3. Galecki knew that he wanted to be an actor at a very young age and by the time he was 7 he was appearing in productions at Chicago’s Goodman Theater. Johnny got a boost to his career when he played Chevy Chase’s son, Rusty Griswold, in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Unfortunately, Galecki lost his father soon afterwards at the young age of 16.
Johnny soon became a popular part of the iconic 90s sitcom, Roseanne. He played Rosanne’s daughter, Darlene’s, boyfriend, David Healy. His awkward, yet lovable demeanor captured young hearts everywhere (including mine). After Roseanne ended in 1997, Galecki continued to land minor acting gigs, including parts in the films I Know What You Did Last Summer and Vanilla Sky.
Another interesting thing that happened after Roseanne is that Galecki left behind the wholesome character of David Healy. In 2007, he played a male prostitute in the Tony Award-nominated play The Little Dog Laughed. The role required a full-frontal nude scene by Galecki. While the move was pretty risky, the role earned Johnny praise as well as a Theater World Award for “Outstanding Debut”. After two decades on TV, Galecki finally received his first Emmy Award nomination, as well as a Golden Globe nod, for his role as Leonard on the Big Bang Theory.
In addition to giving his career another boost, The Big Bang Theory helped Galecki with his love life. For two years while filming the series, he secretly dated co-star Kaley Cuoco. However, the couple split in 2010. Galecki found love again a few years later with another actress, Kelli Garner. Unlike his relationship with Cuoco, it didn’t take long for media outlets to report that Galecki and Garner were dating. Galecki is a case of the child star done right, as he has had virtually no drama plague him during his career.
Who knows what success will follow Galecki once his iconic role of Leonard Hofstadter wraps up? Currently, Galecki is filming a movie called Rings in which he plays a character named Gabriel. Rings is actually the third film in the Ring franchise. With Galecki starring in a popular film franchise, this endeavor just might be another boost to his already productive career. More about the new Ring movie will come soon. Until its release, watch out for Johnny Galecki on season 10 of the Big Bang Theory. Of course, watch for the rest of the cast as well. Season 10 starts in September.
